Adolf Hitler's First Antisemitic Writing

Hitler returned from a military hospital to Munich in early 1919. There he underwent a Reichswehr sponsored course of systematic political education for demobilizing soldiers that featured Pan­German nationalism, antisemitism, and anti­socialism. These same themes were prominent in Bavarian politics following the repression of the Munich revolution of 1918­19. Because antisemitism had not played a notable part in Bavarian politics prior to the revolutionary disturbances, a Herr Adolf Gemlich was prompted to send an inquiry about the importance of the "Jewish question" to Captain Karl Mayr, the officer in charge of the Reichswehr News and Enlightenment Department in Munich. Mayr referred him to Hitler, who had distinguished himself in the above­mentioned course by the vehemence of his radical nationalist and antisemitic views, and by his oratorical talents. Hitler was already feeling his way toward a political career; four days before responding to Gemlich in the letter translated below, he had paid his first visit to the German Workers' Party (eventually renamed, the National Socialist Workers' Party) as a confidential agent of the Reichswehr.

In the letter to Gemlich he appears anxious to establish his credentials as a knowledgeable and sober anti-Semite. Compared to the inflammatory mass­meeting oratory that he was soon to make his specialty, Hitler's rhetoric here is quite tame, stressing the need for a "rational" and "scientific" antisemitism. Some historians have interpreted the letter's call for the "irrevocable removal [Entfernung]" of the Jews from German life as a prefiguring of the Holocaust. But it is clear from the context and from later statements that, at this point, Hitler meant segregation or expulsion rather than systematic liquidation.

The letter, Hitler's first explicitly political writing, impressed his Reichswehr superiors and he soon gained a reputation among radical rightist and socially respectable nationalist conservative groups as a man who could help inoculate the masses against revolution and whose antisemitic rhetoric could help discredit the democratic Weimar Republic. Now, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles has acquired what it believes may be the original version of the document, known as the Gemlich letter and the center bought it in cost of $150,000. In July, the center plans to put it on public view for the first time, at its Museum of Tolerance, making the letter the centerpiece of its Holocaust exhibit.

Dear Herr Gemlich,

The danger posed by Jewry for our people today finds expression in the undeniable aversion of wide sections of our people. The cause of this aversion is not to be found in a clear recognition of the consciously or unconsciously systematic and pernicious effect of the Jews as a totality upon our nation. Rather, it arises mostly from personal contact and from the personal impression which the individual Jew leaves­­almost always an unfavorable one. For this reason, antisemitism is too easily characterized as a mere emotional phenomenon. And yet this is incorrect. Antisemitism as a political movement may not and cannot be defined by emotional impulses, but by recognition of the facts. The facts are these: First, Jewry is absolutely a race and not a religious association. Even the Jews never designate themselves as Jewish Germans, Jewish Poles, or Jewish Americans but always as German, Polish, or American Jews. Jews have never yet adopted much more than the language of the foreign nations among whom they live. A German who is forced to make use of the French language in France, Italian in Italy, Chinese in China does not thereby become a Frenchman, Italian, or Chinaman. It's the same with the Jew who lives among us and is forced to make use of the German language. He does not thereby become a German. Neither does the Mosaic faith, so important for the survival of this race, settle the question of whether someone is a Jew or non­Jew. There is scarcely a race whose members belong exclusively to just one definite religion.

Through thousands of years of the closest kind of inbreeding, Jews in general have maintained their race and their peculiarities far more distinctly than many of the peoples among whom they have lived. And thus comes the fact that there lives amongst us a non­ German, alien race which neither wishes nor is able to sacrifice its racial character or to deny its feeling, thinking, and striving. Nevertheless, it possesses all the political rights we do. If the ethos of the Jews is revealed in the purely material realm, it is even clearer in their thinking and striving. Their dance around the golden calf is becoming a merciless struggle for all those possessions we prize most highly on earth.

The value of the individual is no longer decided by his character or by the significance of his achievements for the totality but exclusively by the size of his fortune, by his money.

The loftiness of a nation is no longer to be measured by the sum of its moral and spiritual powers, but rather by the wealth of its material possessions.

This thinking and striving after money and power, and the feelings that go along with it, serve the purposes of the Jew who is unscrupulous in the choice of methods and pitiless in their employment. In autocratically ruled states he whines for the favor of "His Majesty" and misuses it like a leech fastened upon the nations. In democracies he vies for the favor of the masses, cringes before the "majesty of the people," and recognizes only the majesty of money.

He destroys the character of princes with byzantine flattery, national pride (the strength of a people), with ridicule and shameless breeding to depravity. His method of battle is that public opinion which is never expressed in the press but which is nonetheless managed and falsified by it. His power is the power of money, which multiplies in his hands effortlessly and endlessly through interest, and which forces peoples under the most dangerous of yokes. Its golden glitter, so attractive in the beginning, conceals the ultimately tragic consequences. Everything men strive after as a higher goal, be it religion, socialism, democracy, is to the Jew only means to an end, the way to satisfy his lust for gold and domination.

In his effects and consequences he is like a racial tuberculosis of the nations.

The deduction from all this is the following: an antisemitism based on purely emotional grounds will find its ultimate expression in the form of the pogrom.[1] An antisemitism based on reason, however, must lead to systematic legal combating and elimination of the privileges of the Jews, that which distinguishes the Jews from the other aliens who live among us (an Aliens Law). The ultimate objective [of such legislation] must, however, be the irrevocable removal of the Jews in general.

For both these ends a government of national strength, not of national weakness, is necessary.

The Republic in Germany owes its birth not to the uniform national will of our people but the sly exploitation of a series of circumstances which found general expression in a deep, universal dissatisfaction. These circumstances however were independent of the form of the state and are still operative today. Indeed, more so now than before. Thus, a great portion of our people recognizes that a changed state­form cannot in itself change our situation. For that it will take a rebirth of the moral and spiritual powers of the nation.

And this rebirth cannot be initiated by a state leadership of irresponsible majorities, influenced by certain party dogmas, an irresponsible press, or internationalist phrases and slogans. [It requires] instead the ruthless installation of nationally minded leadership personalities with an inner sense of responsibility.

But these facts deny to the Republic the essential inner support of the nation's spiritual forces. And thus today's state leaders are compelled to seek support among those who draw the exclusive benefits of the new formation of German conditions, and who for this reason were the driving force behind the revolution­­the Jews. Even though (as various statements of the leading personalities reveal) today's leaders fully realized the danger of Jewry, they (seeking their own advantage) accepted the readily proffered support of the Jews and also returned the favor. And this pay­off consisted not only in every possible favoring of Jewry, but above all in the hindrance of the struggle of the betrayed people against its defrauders, that is in the repression of the antisemitic movement.

[1] Pogrom in Russian means devastation. Until recently, the term described exclusively the organized or spontaneous massacres of Jews. In Russia the worst pogroms occurred in 1881, 1903, 1905, and during the civil war following the Revolution of 1917 in areas controlled by the anti­Bolshevik White armies, especially the Ukraine.

Anti-Semitic, Who Us?

I hate Zionists, nor Jews. It's anti-Zionism, not anti-Semitism:

* A Chicago Jewish day school received a bomb threat.
* A molotov cocktail was thrown at a Chicago synagogue.
* Hand-made posters in support of Hamas were placed on two synagogues in Irvine, California.

None of these places are Israeli. And yet, somehow, they're all being attacked as if they were connected to Israel. Why is that?

Hmmm... Let's think:

Officials say they don't know if there's a link between the incident and increased violence in the Middle East.

Right. They don't know. They can't figure out why people will attack Jewish schools and religious institutions when they're angry with Israel, the Jewish State. But again, it isn't anti-Zionism. It's anti-Semitism.

Anti-Zionism has become the most dangerous and effective form of anti- Semitism in our time, through its systematic delegitimization, defamation, and demonization of Israel. Although not a priori anti-Semitic, the calls to dismantle the Jewish state, whether they come from Muslims, the Left, or the radical Right, increasingly rely on an anti-Semitic stereotypization of classic themes, such as the manipulative "Jewish lobby," the Jewish/Zionist "world conspiracy," and Jewish/Israeli "warmongers."

One major driving force of this anti-Zionism/anti-Semitism is the transformation of the Palestinian cause into a "holy war"; another source is anti-Americanism linked with fundamentalist Islamism. In the current context, classic conspiracy theories, such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, are enjoying a spectacular revival.

The common denominator of the new anti-Zionism has been the systematic effort to criminalize Israeli and Jewish behavior, so as to place it beyond the pale of civilized and acceptable conduct.

Indeed, Israel is today the only state on the face of this planet that such a large number of disparate people wish to see disappear - itself a chilling reminder of the Nazi propaganda of the 1930s. The most virulent expressions of this "exterminationist" or genocidal anti-Zionism have come from the Arab-Muslim world, which is the historical heir of the earlier 20th-century forms of totalitarian anti-Semitism in Hitler's Germany and the Soviet Union. Even "moderate" Muslim statesmen such as Mahathir Mohammad have publicly repeated the classic anti-Semitic belief that "Jews rule the world" while eliciting virtually no objections in the Islamic world. The more radical Islamists from Al-Qaida to the Palestinian Hamas go much further since they fuse indiscriminate terror, suicide bombings, and a Protocols of Zion style of anti-Semitism with the ideology of jihad. In this case, the socalled "war against Zionism" unmistakably embraces the total demonization of the "Jewish other":

As the "enemy of mankind," as deadly poisonous snakes, as barbarian "Nazis" and "Holocaust manipulators" who control international finance, not to mention America, or the Western mass media, while they busily instigate wars and revolutions to achieve world domination.

Such conspiracy theories sailing under "anti-Zionist" colors constitute a highly toxic, even murderous worldview that today is linked to religious fanaticism and a worldwide revolutionary agenda. The same demonizing stereotypes can, however, be found in moderate pro-Western Egypt (home to the Protocols based anti-Semitic soap opera Rider without a Horse), secular Baathist Syria, conservative Wahhabite Saudi Arabia, and the Shiite fundamentalist Iran of the ayatollahs. This is an ideological anti-Zionism that seeks both the annihilation of Israel and a world "liberated from the Jews" - in other words, it is a totalist form of anti-Semitism.

Palestinian suffering and Arab "anti-Zionism" have helped to infect Europe with an old-new version of anti-Semitism in which Jews are rapacious, bloodsucking colonialists. The theme is that Jews were rootless, imperialist invaders who came to Palestine to conquer the land by brute force, to expel or "cleanse" it of its natives. They are the modern "Crusaders" with no legitimate rights to the soil - an alien transplant, absolutely foreign to the region. They succeeded only because of a gigantic occult conspiracy in which the Zionists (the Jews) manipulated Great Britain and subsequently America. This is a typically anti-Semitic narrative of which Hitler might have approved - widely believed around the world, even credited by millions of educated people in the West. The popularity of the Protocols today is the one telling symptom of the growing merger between anti-Semitism and "anti-Zionism".

Zionism is increasingly depicted in some mainstream media as being "criminal" in its essence as well as its behavior.

Zionism, the national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel, advocated, from its inception, tangible as well as spiritual aims. Jews of all persuasions, left and right, religious and secular, joined to form the Zionist movement and worked together toward these goals. Disagreements led to rifts, but ultimately, the common goal of a Jewish state in its ancient homeland was attained. The term “Zionism” was coined in 1890 by Nathan Birnbaum.

Is World Waking Up?

Prominent non-Jews start to understand anti-Semitism threatens their societies.

The international attention about the Second Conference of the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism in Ottawa earlier this month has largely focused on the outstanding speech by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative Party.

It is indeed rare in today’s world to hear any prime minister say about the United Nations: “There are, after all, a lot more votes in being anti-Israeli than in taking a stand. But as long as I am prime minister, whether it is at the UN or the Francophonie or anywhere else, Canada will take that stand whatever the cost. And friends, I say this not just because it is the right thing to do, but because history shows us, and the ideology of the anti-Israeli mob tells us all too well if we listen to it, that those who threaten the existence of the Jewish people are a threat to all of us.”

For many people abroad, Harper’s statement came as a surprise. His government, however, has a long record of pro-Israeli actions and statements. He was barely in power when he withdrew Canada’s financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority government when Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh became its prime minister in 2006. Harper supported Israel in the 2006 Lebanon War. In that year, Canada also opposed a resolution condemning Israel at the gathering of French-speaking nations. To reach unanimity the text was modified and didn’t mention Israel. Canada was also the first country to announce that it would not attend the Durban II Anti-racism conference in 2009 in Geneva.

Canada has indeed paid for this pro-Israeli attitude. In the recent elections for a seat in the Security Council it was defeated by Portugal. Portuguese sources said that Iran and Venezuela together made an effort to promote the country’s election to the Security Council. One will have to follow Portuguese Mideast policy to see whether the country will pay back Iran and Venezuela or ignore them now that it has been elected.

Will US follow Canada's example?
Opposition Leader, Michael Ignatieff of the Liberal party, made a very positive speech as well. One of the remarks of this historian and former Harvard professor was: “We should seek to end the parade of one-sided resolutions at the United Nations. We should use whatever influence we have to restore the balance in the work of the United Nations human rights bodies. We don’t claim that Israel is perfect but singling out one country for repeated denunciations while ignoring the human rights abuses of others is a flagrant misuse of the United Nations.”

The problem with the Liberals - which traditionally draw the majority of the Jewish vote - is their record toward Israel. Under the last Liberal Prime Minister, Paul Martin, then-Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew went to Arafat’s funeral in November 2004. At that time, it was already widely known that Arafat had personally authorized and financed suicide attacks against Israeli citizens in the years after he received the Nobel Prize for peace. In 2005 Pettigrew laid a wreath on Arafat’s grave.

Irwin Cotler, the driving force behind the Ottawa conference, was Justice Minister on behalf of the Liberals in the Martin cabinet. He succeeded to bring parliamentarians from 45 countries to Canada. His accomplishment in establishing - as an opposition parliamentarian - the Canadian Parliamentarian Commission for Combating Anti-Semitism as an interparty body was even more major, in view of the partisan atmosphere in Canadian politics. The commission report will be ready this spring and I have been told by some of its members that it will inter alia devote attention to the substantial problems of anti-Semitism at a variety of Canadian campuses. The Parti Quebecois, which promotes sovereignty for the French-speaking province left the Commission midway. Yet its leader attended the Ottawa conference and did not cause problems.

When attending such a conference so much is going on, that one can only see part of it. In one of the commissions I attended, the question was raised whether one will ever hear US President Obama or Foreign Minister Hillary Clinton make statements like Harper’s. These remarks were well in place because Obama was at the time in Indonesia and criticized Israel’s plan to expand settlements and remained silent about the fact that 25% of Indonesia’s Muslims share the world view of Osama bin Laden and 13% support suicide bombing. The American president there also made the ridiculous remark that Indonesia’s democracy and tolerance should be an example for the world.

Genocidal anti-Semitism
A crucial issue in the discussions at the conference was the genocidal anti-Semitism coming out of parts of the Muslim world. Many examples of hate mongering by Muslims were mentioned. One of the pioneers of the parliamentary combat against anti-Semitism has been British Labor Parliamentarian John Mann who represents a constituency almost without Jews. He has explained that Jews helped his grandparents in difficult times and that story was passed on through the generations in his family.

At the gala dinner where Mann spoke, he mentioned that the Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK had called for the defeat of six candidates whom it considered pro-Zionist. Four of these lost in the last elections, though not necessarily because of this. This opposition to pro-Israelis happens elsewhere as well. A former Portuguese European Parliamentarian told me that the Iranians managed to get him off the Social Democrats’ list of candidates in the last European election because of his pro-Israeli positions.

Despite all, the attention to Muslim mass murder threats, violence and hate mongering, the Ottawa Protocol accepted by the conference doesn’t mention the word "Muslim." The political climate in Canada is such that the text would be decried as Islamophobic despite all the evidence of the major genocidal forces in the Muslim world. That is as much a sign of the times in which we live as the fact that many prominent non-Jews start to understand that anti-Semitism threatens their societies.

Religious Hatred

A Christian friend sent me a piece from the Rev. Pike and asked if I wanted to respond. I answered him that these kind of articles are a problem because they use Christianity to attack Judaism, and this would require me to respond to Christianity. Also, they consider Judaism a gutter religion, and to respond to them would be to dignify their claims, such as rabbis such as me practice bestiality! What should I say, "I don't practice bestiality"? But if my friend sent it to me, and it is there, perhaps I should respond.

Pike's first paragraph begins, "The Bible says sex in marriage is one of G-d's greatest gifts." If this is so, why did the founder of Christianity never marry? Why did the Church, for thousands of years, forbid a spiritual priest to marry? Lie number one.

The second paragraph claims that G-d took Israel for his bride and when the founder of Christianity became the deity, he "rescued her from oblivion." Alas, "Israel...became a spiritual harlot." Another lie. G-d never changed His mind about Jews and He never changed Himself to be the founder of Christianity. That is blasphemy.

The next paragraphs say that Jews are involved in pornography because they descend from Pharisees, the rabbis of the Talmud, who practiced bestiality. I don't want to dignify this by calling it a lie. This is sick.

Unfortunately, ancient Christianity, Catholic and Protestant, had anti-Semitic teachings similar to Rev. Pike's material. Luther was a ferocious hater, not only of Jews, but he was involved in inflaming people to murder peasants. The Catholic Church had ferocious anti-Semites such as Ambrose and Augustine, indeed, hate of Jews is part and parcel of early Christianity.

After the Second World War with its Holocaust, most Christians changed their theology. The Catholics did, and so did the Evangelicals. But there are still Catholics like Mel Gibson's father (and maybe the son when he is drunk) who reject what the new Church has done, and believe in the old way, that Jews are to be hated. There are still Protestants like the Rev. Pike, who believe in the old way, that Christianity is there to pour on hate about Jews, who rejected their beliefs.

I recall my childhood in Washington, DC. We had a mixed neighborhood, and as little kids we all played together fine. When Billy Wilson went to a Catholic parochial school he became a ferocious anti-Semite and would come over to us and curse us and all Jews. When we played baseball, there was a Protestant called Tommy who would pitch a fastball at the head of any Jew who came to bat. The fact is, that the early Christian religion was ferociously anti-Semitic. This is documented by a Catholic priest in his classic, "Constantine's Sword."

Today it is rare to hear in America of a Christian who is anti-Semitic. In fact, Christians are the greatest friends of Israel, and are doing a lot for Jews. But the rot is still out there, especially on the Internet.

I wish to reiterate that this piece I am writing is because of respect for a dear Christian friend. I have other Christian friends who would do for me their best as I would do for them. We are partners in the terrible war against the fiends who want to pervert the world, dominate it and control it and contaminate our children. We must stand strong. We must stand together. We want a world of peace, without the radicals and without the haters. We must fight both.

Now in Jerusalem the Jews and Christians are standing together to fight the International Gay Parade. They want to take over and seduce our children. They won't because we are together and will defeat them.

Indeed, the best friend of the perverts is someone like Rev. Pike. By showing that religious people are haters they promote secularism. Hollywood is filthy because people prefer filth to religious wars. I don't say that people are right about that, but secularism has triumphed because religious hate caused wars and much bloodshed. That is a historical fact. Therefore, if we want to prevail against the radicals, we must answer the haters like Rev. Pike. He is the radical's best friend and only hope.

Now, let's look again into the claim about Israel as a bride of heaven. I believe, of course, that G-d took Israel as His bride at the Covenant with Abraham described in Genesis, about 3700 years ago. I also believe that the Covenant G-d made did not die, decline, or change in any way, and that Israel is today the bride of G-d. G-d does not change His mind, and He surely does not change Himself! The claim of Rev. Pike that G-d not only changed brides but changed Himself into the founder of Christianity is incredible, but then again, that is what he believes.

Rev. Pike explains that Jews are prone to porn because they come from Talmudic rabbis called Pharisees. I am a Pharisee, as I accept the teaching of the Talmud and the rabbis, and all of us reject Christianity. So Rev. Pike stokes the ancient hate of Israel for rejecting Christianity, and blames the rabbis. As a matter of fact, Christianity died out in Israel very soon after it was founded, and had to be reinvented in Greece by Jews who fled Israel. Jews, all of them, had no interest in Christianity. We are G-d's people and anyone mortal person or even an angel who comes to us and tells us to worship him had better start running. It is as simple as that.

The Catholic priest James Carroll in his modern classic "The Sword of Constantinople" tells us about Saint John Chrysostom, bishop of Antioch around the time of Augustine's baptism. (Page 213) This is what this bishop taught about Jews: "I know that many people hold a high regard for the Jew, and consider their way of life worthy of respect at the present time. This is why I am hurrying to pull up this fatal notion by the roots... A place where a whore stands on display is a whorehouse. What is more, the synagogue is not only a whorehouse and a theater; it is also a den of thieves and a haunt of wild animals... No better disposed than pigs or goats, the Jews live by the rule of debauchery and inordinate gluttony. Only one thing they understand: to gorge themselves and to get drunk...By making themselves unfit for work, they have become ready for slaughter." This prepared people to kill Jews. Augustine absorbed this, as did others, and it remained the tenet of Christianity until the Second World War. Many changed them in order not to be laughing stocks, but not Rev. Pike. He is still out there trying to kill the heretics. That is why many people hate religion. The idea of killing heretics almost destroyed Europe, and it is feared by all civilized people. Rev. Pike is for real. He wants to kill the heretics. The first step is to demonize them, and then to declare that "such people are fit only to be slaughtered," as did Chrysostom and Augustine in their time.

Ambrose wanted to exterminate the Jews. Augustine wanted to torment them so badly that they would have to convert. But both of these profited by the lies told by Rev. Pike and the concept that Israel was a nation of "bestiality", etc.

Once you have a religious zeal in besmirching a decent nation, famed for its family values above all others, we have statements like this from Rev. Pike, "The Pharisees perverted the law to permit adultery." (Well, isn't that an improvement on bestiality? Maybe he means that the rabbis of the Talmud slept with married mates of animals.)

Rev. Pike tells us that Talmudic rabbis practiced adultery, bestiality, and rape. Sounds just like that German fellow over there. They went to the same school.

It goes on and on. Today we laugh at these kind of ravings, but for thousands of years, this was what people were taught by their clergy, and they responded in kind. That Jews survived is proof that we, Israel, are G-d's Chosen people and will never be destroyed. We are patient, we have waited long for our redemption. And we will see it flower and conclude with the destruction of hate.

A History of Hate for Jews

There are many reasons for people to hate Jews. In fact, the Talmud says that hate for Jews began immediately upon the Jews receiving the Ten Commandments and the Torah. Just as children are jealous when father gives one child something but not the others, so are the nations of the world envious and angry at Jews for receiving the Torah instead of them.

And yet, during biblical times, true hate for Jews, or modern anti-Semitism, did not exist. The ancient pagans never murdered Jews because they were Jews. The ancient pagans conquered Israel and taxed and oppressed the Jews, but did not disdain their value as people. The problem in the biblical eras was just the opposite. The surrounding nations got along so well with Jews that Jews imitated them, worshipped their idols and intermarried with them, to the deep chagrin of the prophets and rabbis.

Some ancient nations, such as Babylonia, conquered Israel and exiled the Jews. But Nebuchadnezzar greatly valued the rabbis of Israel and appointed them his senior advisers. He was close to Jeremiah the Prophet, and Daniel was his adviser. The Persians conquered the Babylonians and helped the Jews return to Israel and even supported these efforts.

Alexander the Great was very good to the Jews of Israel, but upon his death, the Hellenists tormented the Jews without mercy. This period, about 2300 years ago, was a new level of hate for Jews. We thus demarcate between the pre-Hellenistic era and the post-Hellenistic era in anti-Semitism. Before the rise of Greece, nobody hated Jews, nobody raped Jewish women, nobody forced them to convert to another religion. The Greeks introduced the idea of forcing everyone to worship one way. The Greeks divided the world into the elite and the inferior. The elite did what they wanted and the inferior were slaves. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle accorded elitist status to people who thought the right way. Thus, unlike the Biblical Era, the post-Biblical Era, beginning with the Greeks, taught the powerful and the elitist to enslave others and destroy their capacity for independence. Thus religious freedom was now limited.

By its nature, paganism did not foist one belief upon others. Paganism allowed each person the freedom to find worship in a unique and individualistic manner. The Greeks, however, felt that any democracy and freedom of the masses threatened society, because society could only survive as an extension of the superior ideas of the philosopher-kings and elite. The Jews therefore thrived under the pagans, but suffered under the Greeks.

After the Greeks, the world's great religions accepted the social need for a unifying religion and philosophy. Judaism was then mortally threatened. By the fourth century the Church seized control of the Roman Empire. Saints Ambrose decreed that all who refused his religion must die. This would have been the end of the Jewish people, but for two events. One, the Roman Empire began to collapse, thus weakening its capacity or interest in fighting with Jews. Two, after Ambrose the senior prelate, Saint Augustine, decreed that Jews must be coerced to convert, not killed. This coercion was to treat them as inferior to other people, to oppress them, ghettoize them, and employ all kinds of torture and torment until Jews would surrender their religion. Without the conversion of the Jews, said Augustine, the Church has failed.

Five hundred years ago in Germany, Martin Luther raised the standard of the Reformation. First he attempted to attract Jews to his cause, but when they refused it, he became a furious hater of Israel. Thus, it is no accident that Germany eventually did what it did to Jews.

Religious hatred of Jews lasted as official Church Doctrine until after the Second World War. The horrors of the Holocaust forced the various facets of Western religion to re-think their theology. The Catholic Church made some changes in its theology. The Protestants did not, but many of them embraced a new behavior relative to the Jews. Thus, today, Israel's best friends are Protestants, although their churches never changed their theology. This leads many people to question the sincerity of the new warmth to Israel. It may serve to lessen the pressure to change the anti-Semitic theology of the Church. It may also open the door to converting Jews. The church works furiously to convert Jews, and such a policy would probably not exist if the church did not deprecate Judaism. If Judaism is acceptable to heaven, why convert them? Obviously, the converters do not accept Judaism.

The refusal of the Jews to accept Christianity is a major factor in anti-Semitism. However, G-d made a covenant with Israel and promised it would never stop. Christianity therefore believes that G-d changed His mind, something the Jews will not accept. At any rate, Jews believe in G-d because He gave us the Ten Commandments and the Torah at Sinai, and because of the many generations of prophets and their revealed prophecy. No mortal can come forward and instruct us to desert our religion. Thus, the religious differences between Israel and the nations is quite serious.

Many Jews broke, as Augustine said they would, and became fervent enemies of Israel. Some of the great anti-Semites were born Jews. This was true in recent times when large amounts of Jews embraced Communism and tormented religious Jews.

All of this hate is quite frightening. On the other hand, the Talmud says, "How can a sheep survive among seventy wolves?" Obviously, G-d and only G-d saved us from the nations of the world who try to devour us. This is our great solace. G-d is with us. In the future, surely, the near future, the Messiah will come and reveal the role of Israel and the supremacy of the Torah. Then all those who tormented them will have to answer to a very angry Creator, who proclaimed to the nations His love of Israel.

Why Some Caucasians are Becoming Nazis?

Here we explore the explosion of hate in present times among American and European Caucasians. As Caucasians increasingly refuse to marry or to have children, demographically, they fall behind others. Inevitably, as happened in Europe, others come to do the work the Caucasians are not available to do, and racial and religious conflict begins. This leads to hate, which often is directed at Jews, among others.

No Fun Without Family

America is a culture of fun. Fun is a huge industry. Movie stars, sports figures, and entertainers make fortunes. Shaq O’Neil makes $200,000 a game, or $6,000 a minute of playing time.

The successful doctor up the block from me just took a second mortgage on his house. Without it, he can’t keep up with the HMOs, pay his insurance, and feed his family.

Kobe Bryant declined to plead in a rape case. Michael Jackson, who entertains our children, was arrested for child molestation. A sports columnist wrote recently how atypical a week it was because nobody in professional basketball got arrested.

A friend of mine worked thirty years for IBM. When he neared retirement age, IBM fired him. He now lives on a tiny pension, and is not getting any younger. Another friend told me a year before he was fired, “The computer industry drains you until you reach fifty, and then they let you go. They don’t want to support you in your old age.”

What he predicted came true. Everybody knows it is true. The Global companies and billionaires get rich while most people struggle. Today, a family cannot survive unless the wife leaves her children and works. This is because the pursuit of fun has doubled consumption since the fifties. Double consumption means double people working.

If we could devote the time we spend on “fun” to developing financial stability and security, we would have much more real fun.

Instead, we are becoming a society of very rich global business people and fun stars, and an increasingly oppressed everyone else.

Pulitzer Prize winning columnist David Broder of the Washington Post recently studied the finances of all of the states in the country. They are all going on the dole. One state built a new prison but has no money to hire guards. A county just sold the farm of an 89-year-old woman because she didn’t pay a few hundred dollars in taxes.

Does this sound important? If so, why do people sit for a few hours every night watching television or videos? Why are they not worried about an impending financial collapse of state government

You may think that the states will turn to the Federal government. However, the Federal annual income is about a trillion or two dollars. The Federal deficit is about 6 or 7 trillion. In a few years, that will rise to 25 trillion dollars. How can a country, spending printed paper with nothing to back it, survive? This is how they do it in the banana republics. But, as Paul Krugman of the New York Times observed, the financial debacle facing the Federal government is far worse than faced by any banana republic. Does anyone care? No. They are too busy watching Michael Jackson and anyone else that provides “fun.”

You may think that I am saying that entertainers should get less money. This is not my message. I am not in favor of lessening anyone’s earnings. I want to do away with the “fanaticism of fun.” Fun as we have it in America is a consuming and deleterious thing. When we teach children to worship anyone who has certain physical characteristics and to deride others who are less blessed, we destroy our children.

My children, and nearly all of my neighbors, never heard of Shaq or Kobe , and certainly not Michael Jackson. We have no televisions. We never go to movies. We spend our money on our grandchildren, not sports.

A Presidential Commission on Fatherhood, during the Clinton administration, found that fewer Americans want marriage. People are now having babies without marriage, because marriage doesn’t work or is too demanding for “fun” people. The study found that American men consider children an expense that interferes with their fun. In my Orthodox Jewish community, we have no “professional fun.” That is why we have flourishing families, may they increase. Ultimately, family is the finest fun, the real thing.

My energy goes for my children and grandchildren. My walls are lined with pictures, not of movie stars, not of sports stars, but of grandchildren. Somebody said to me, “David, you are a billionaire.” What billionaire has what I have? You can’t buy a happy grandchild.

I have fun. I get down on the rug and bark like a dog. My little grandchildren go wild. Meanwhile, secular sir is out there drinking. What fun. Or he has other fun. “Fun” ultimately leads to searching for what is not available. Searching for fun leads to addictive and compulsory behavior, even perversion. When you live for fun, you never find it. Elvis Presley killed himself seeking a bigger dose of drugs. He no longer had “fun” from the old dose.

When you live for family, every day is heaven, even when a grandchild finds out where you keep your financial records and throws them all over the floor.

A child senses if a parent is dedicated. When a child realizes that parents live only for them, the child responds and makes the parent happier than any fun. When a child realizes that parents would rather be at the movies than listening to his prattle, the child can make the parents so miserable that there are no words for it.

Thus, “fun” and family are mutually exclusive. Throughout the Western world, people are into fun. They are not having children. Then they wonder why their world is disappearing.

In Europe they just raised the retirement age. There are not enough young people to put earnings into pension funds. People who are ready to retire have to get back to work. The future is bleak. People live longer, and retirement ages will be longer and longer. When will it end? There is no world without children.

France just had a heat wave that killed thousands of people. Who were they? They were old people who sat and suffocated because no children were there to help them. The government can’t do it. When my wife and I are 120 years old, our children will fight for the right to have us as guests.

Europeans have no young workers from their basic population. They have to import young people from around the world. This leads to racial and religious problems, even hate. It all begins from running after fun. Where it ends, nobody knows. The power is from babies. Nothing else matters. Fun means no demographic power. Family means demographic and ultimately political power.

As Western whites realize they can’t have fun and children, they go without children. They then import others or allow immigration from areas that are totally different or even opposing to what they want for their country. Seeing their world disappearing, many of them become Nazis.
I once met a financially successful woman in her forties who never married. She told me how much fun she has in her life. She just went to Hawaii . She swam, heard a good band, sampled the food, and probably met a man. Hopefully, she practiced safe sex. I felt so bad for her. I thought of what my daughters were doing. I raised them differently.

Once my daughters sat in front of the house and played with a little nephew. A woman walked by and asked them what they were doing. They replied, “We are babysitting our nephew.” The woman huffed and said, “My children don’t baby sit. They are not slaves!” My daughters had the proper upbringing, so they held in their feelings until they got into the house. Then we all had a good laugh.

In those days, there was very little money in the house. However, that Passover I bought little silver cups for my daughters. I said, “These cups are only for slaves.” Every year at the Passover meal, those cups adorned the table, and all of us thanked G-d that we were “slaves.”

I am a slave to my children. My children are slaves to the family. Slaves? By our standards, this is living, not slaving. But to the “fun” person, doing anything for anyone but yourself is “slavery.” When “fun” man meets “fun” woman, the first thing they do is have a fight over who is the “slave.” Half of marriages end in divorce, and many people just give up on marriage. They then have babies without marriage, which damages the child. The main thing is to have fun. Fun? Let me assure you. A broken child is no fun. A happy child is fun. And to have a happy child, you have to be a “slave.”

Professional “fun” is perverse. Family fun is real. Pleasure begins and ends with complete dedication to family.

In the sixties, rebellious college students took drugs and did sex. Some of them got sick of it and became religious. One such man came to a Yeshiva and said, “I was in San Francisco with a beautiful naked girl doing drugs. I thought this was pleasure. Believe me, it is a lot better now.”

Once, in a Rabbinical Court , we noticed a strangely clad woman coming to us. I couldn’t believe that in this day and age a woman could dress the way she was dressed. She looked like a poor imitation of a Medieval Nun. She had so much “fun” in her life, that now she wanted to find something else.

I once wrote a column that said, “Put your TV in the trash, or your child in the trash.” One of them has to go.

If you didn’t listen then, I tell you now, “Take your child out of the trash, and stay out of it yourself.”

The clock is ticking. I don’t mean the clock that ends the half in basketball. I mean the clock that ticks the seconds until our world disappears in fun.

Is Israel criticized more than other countries who are are conducting themselves in a far less humanitarian ways?

While anything Israel does, may do, or does not do reveals that country's depravity, acts of commission or omission by other countries pass unchallenged or are not condemned in the same way, or are treated with indulgence. In no case is anything done by a country other than Israel used as a pretext for questioning the country's existence. The anti-Zionists eschew comparisons.

Who are the real victims of the 'Double Standard'?

Middle East analyst & commentator:
The NEW YORK TIMES article by Steven Erlanger carries the complaint that the US bombing threat to Iraq represents a "Double Standard" in favor of Israel. The concept that America holds a "Double Standard" in favor of Israel has been ramped up in recent years and has reached a peak now during this latest confrontation with Iraq. Arabists claim the US has used a "Double Standard" when issues regarding Israel are considered. Let us then examine this "Double Standard" minus the Orwellian Double-Speak.

Not surprisingly, Jews are the world's experts on "Double Standards" having been victims of such "Double Standards" for ages. To cover in detail centuries of European "Double Standards" through later years of Islam's "Double Standard" requires an encyclopedia so just a few points to quickly bring us up to the present.

The Christian Church taught its followers that Jews were connected with the devil, were the killers of the Jew Jesus and, therefore, worth hounding or killing, without conscience, if the opportunity arose. "Double Standard" here was merely that Jews were not considered as human, but UNgodly, whereas Christians were entirely human and godly. Therefore Christians were deserving of the Covenant with G-d once the Jews had been either absorbed or eliminated.

In the 7th century, Mohammed supposedly had a vision which declared him the last and final prophet of G-d (called Allah) and the rightful heir to both Judaism and Christianity. He approached the Jews of Mecca with his prophecy, particularly those of the Quraish tribe and made a peace treaty. Before 2 years he broke the Quraish treaty, returned with his new army and slaughtered all the Jews.

Yassir Arafat frequently draws an analogy between Oslo and this Quraish treaty, thus telling knowledgeable Arabs of his true intentions - and his Islamic "Double Standard" as stated in the Koran:. "Make a treaty with your enemy when you are weak; but you must break that treaty and defeat your enemy in war when you are strong". The "Double Standard" is that all must view favorably the self-styled claims of Islam while dismissing the Jewish claim to the Land of Israel which dates back 4000 years.

"Double Standard" in more recent times: The Ottoman Empire held all the vast lands of the Middle East for 400 years. After the Allies won in 1918, they created a Mandate Commission with England and France as administrators. They divided up the Middle East, made new borders and created states where none existed before. Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia were essentially artificial entities, created by England and France as their protectorates for their purposes of political hegemony and financial control of their oil wells and the Suez Canal.

In gratitude for the part they played in the Great War, in 1918 the Jews were to be given their historic land of Palestine, "to create a homeland for the Jewish people and to settle the land (on both sides of the Jordan River)" This commitment was ratified by the US Congress and League of Nations (precursor to the UN).

Unfortunately, in 1922 the British gave away 70% of the land promised to the Jews, vast lands East of the Jordan River, to buy off Abdullah who had moved an army north from the Arabian peninsula (now Saudi Arabia) to threaten his brother Faisel's control of Syria. Jewish Palestine was truncated from 45,000 to 8,000 square miles which became Transjordan. In 1946 King Abdullah declared it the independent state of Jordan. Not one country of the world objected to this betrayal of the Jewish homeland. Even then the Jews, desperate for their own land where they would not be hounded by Christian Europe or Islamic Arabs, accepted the worst of a bad bargain. Here the "Double Standard" became the "Double Cross"

While in control of Palestine, the British consistently followed their usual "Double Standard". They favored the Arabs, imported them from the surrounding Arab countries as laborers and the Arabs came in, drawn by the improved living conditions which Jewish industry, health and sanitation brought. But they weren't native to the land nor had they claims on it "from time immemorial" as did the Jews. The British didn't stop frequent Arab attacks against Jews in rural areas or cities like Hebron and Jerusalem, where Arab pogroms massacred hundreds of men, women and children from the 1920s to 1940s. Again the "Double Standard"

"Double Standards" applied against the Jews in the 30s and 40s that spawned the Holocaust have been delineated competently in many, many books. It is merely necessary to note that the simple phrase "Double Standard" was the very foundation operative in causing and actuating the Holocaust. This includes the Christian Church, most all of the countries of the world, humanitarian agencies (the Red Cross), the media, the intelligentsia, the leaders, et al. Especially despicable was Britain's blockade of Palestine against Jews fleeing certain death during the Nazi extermination campaign. They also stopped survivors from entering Palestine after WWII. Those who tried to run their blockades were jailed in concentration camps on Cyprus.

In 1947, Britain withdrew from Palestine because they tired of Arab attacks against Jews which they (the British) did little to control. Before they left, they stripped the Jews of any weapons they had managed to collect and gave them to the Arabs, along with the British Taggert forts which controlled strategic points of access in Israel. Again the "Double Standard"

The Arab States, themselves were relatively new, threatened to "dance on the blood of the Jews" in the coming battle for the newly Independent Jewish State of Israel. Many of the armies of the invading Arab states were trained and armed by the British.

The Jews, in preparation for a war of annihilation promised by the Arabs, desperately searched the world for weapons. But, the US, Britain and France, among others, declared an arms embargo against the Jews, based on the duplicitous claim that "they could not ship weapons into a potentially hot spot" "Double Standard"?

This embargo didn't apply to the Arabs. Not only did the Arabs have weapons in abundance, plus those left behind by the British, but could freely purchase modern weapons left over from WWII. Meanwhile, the Jews bought old and almost useless weapons from such countries as Czechoslovakia at double prices of new weapons. "Double Standard"

The War for Israel's Independence began before the British left, with continual attacks not stopped by the British. May 15, 1948, the day of Israel's declaration of Independence, newborn Israel was attacked by the 7 well-armed and trained armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

Miraculously, the 600,000 Jews of new Israel, many straight from the Nazi death camps or British internment camps on Cyprus, fought the 7 Arab armies to a standstill. The world still didn't give a damn until it was clear the Arabs were losing. Then and only then, did America step in to snatch success in battle from the Jews. In the 6 defensive wars against the Arabs who threatened to throw the Jews into the sea by Jihad (Holy War), the Arabs lost. But, America and the West were consistent. They interceded to deny the Jews their victory over aggressor nations, again and again and again. "Double Standard"

Remember Camp David where Israel was badgered by the anti-Semitic State Dept and Jimmy Carter to give up Sinai to Egypt - even after the 1973 War when Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur? Menachem Begin paid the price for this peace treaty: $17 Billion dollars, Israel is still paying off the loans needed to fund the Camp David withdrawal and re-equipment after the Yom Kippur War. All Israel got was a cold peace, no normalization, no trade - only vituperative hostility from the government controlled Egyptian press and leaders. Jimmy Carter never said a word when Egypt brought SAM (Surface-to-Air) missile batteries into the Sinai which was supposed to be demilitarized according the Camp David Accords. "Double Standard"

Let us advance to Oslo and the handshake on the White House lawn. It is no secret that Arafat has broken every single line of the agreement with no objections from the US. (Note! Except for some State Dept. double-talk on how, regrettably, this killing or suicide bombing had affected the non-existent peace process.)

Since Olso 274 Jews have been killed by Palestinian terrorists, thousands wounded, many maimed for life. No matter how egregious the act of horror, somehow it was always defined as Israel's fault for being there. If only Israel had given away more, sooner, the poor Palestinians wouldn't have been so frustrated and used suicide bombers to make their point. But, still the State Dept. and White House continue to whitewash the bloody Arafat and say he is fulfilling his commitments. They especially lie when they claim he has abrogated the Palestinian Covenant calling for Israel's destruction.

These lies enable the State Dept to continue funding Arafat's Palestinian Authority with $500 million US taxpayers' dollars. This money has gone into Arafat's pockets to buy up land in Jerusalem, build him palaces with huge underground storage bunkers, to his supporters' personal luxuries, to buy arms that are illegal according to Oslo, to fund a "Police Force" which is really a standing army of over 50,000, plus 9 Secret Services - more than twice the number allowed by Oslo. Arafat says he "will liberate all of Israel for his new State of "Palestine" with Jerusalem as the capital of that State and Only that State - And anyone who doesn't like it can go drink Gaza sea water." He has proclaimed this since Oslo until today.

In 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait with operational assistance of Yassir Arafat and King Hussein of Jordan. The Gulf War was imminent. Bush issued a waiver (pre-pardon) to his Cabinet for whatever financial connections they may have had with Saddam Hussein's buildup of his deadly arsenal. Bush/Baker used $5 billion American taxpayers' dollars through BCCI,hidden in appropriations for the Dept. of Agriculture,to fund Saddam's war machine, in order to counter Iran.

Saddam announced he "will burn half of Israel" and "is fighting to free Jerusalem from the Jews" Somehow, the Jews are at fault because he was caught in a vise of his own making. He threw 39 SCUD missiles at Israel. Palestinians danced on their rooftops cheering Saddam, burning American and Israeli flags (then and now).

Bush refused to allow Israel to retaliate in self-defense. Israel was denied IFF (Identify Friend & Foe) codes to enable her attack on SCUD missile batteries targeting Israel. Bush lied that he would take them out. "Double Cross". But, when one SCUD hit a barracks of American soldiers, Bush quickly ended Desert Storm, leaving Saddam, his elite Army and his Weapons of Mass Destruction intact.

If Israel had been permitted to hit the SCUD batteries, perhaps those Americans would be alive today and the NBC, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons Saddam has in hidden stockpiles would not exist. Saddam was beaten by the American led coalition in 1991. He surrendered to terms of oil embargo and UN inspection searches for his hidden weapons. Both lies. He continued to ship oil through other nations and easily deceived the UN inspectors, continuing to build and hide his stockpile of NBC.

Now the war posturing has begun again, only we hear shouts of unfair "Double Standard" "Why attack Iraq for hiding WMD, Weapons of Mass Destruction when Israel must also have them?"Israel upholds the same ethics that America, France and England. None of these nations would use such weapons,except in a worst-case scenario whereas Saddam has used his and would use them again as his weapon of first choice.

Today Palestinians are demonstrating for Saddam with signs encouraging him to send chemical and biological missiles against US troops and Israel. These often violent rallies are being organized directly by Yasir Arafat. Polls show that 80% of Palestinians support Saddam bombing Tel Aviv.

According to Moscow's PRAVDA, Aleksey Yablokov, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said: "The PLO has twice said that it has nuclear weapons allegedly purchased illegally from Russia."

Did the teenagers who wrapped themselves in the American flag and shouted down Sec. of State Albright understand that long range missiles and artillery shells loaded with poison are not merely constructed for deterrence but they can be used in America? Saddam means to use his - now or later. Who primed the chanting bubble-heads to think that Saddam was only doing this because Israel had denied one of his co-conspirators (Arafat) the right to make Israel "Judenrein" (free of Jews). Then the panting and chanting grew louder, as they repeated the mantra of "Double Standard, Double Standard"

As always the media, masters of "Double Standard" picked up the cry (or initiated it) and there you have it. Clearly, if Israel did not exist, Saddam wouldn't have invaded Kuwait. Iran would not be building nuclear weapons nor would Syria have one of the most advanced chemical arsenals in the Mideast.

Jews understand the "Double Standard" very well, having been its victims for centuries. As the Arabs and fellow liberals scream about "Double Standards" remember that Carl Jung said: "Aggressors generally first blame their intended victims for what they (the aggressors) wish to do. By blaming the victim, you can then attack, pretending justification."

Watch for the ramping up of the Orwellian cry of "Double Standard" when or if America attacks Iraq. Somehow, the world, with Clinton at its point, will demand that Israel satisfy the blood lust of the Arabs by further withdrawals from her tiny land as compensation for America attacking Iraq.

"Double Standard/Double Cross" They're just a word apart.

Are the Palestinian Arabs given special treatment by the international community?

...it is not just at the expense of the Israelis that the PLO, as we have seen, has been granted priority over other movements, for such priority is prejudicial to all such movements as do not happen to enjoy Arab-African "recognition". By virtue of what criteria should a Palestinian prisoner or casualty enjoy medical care and legal protection refused to a Naga, a Kurd, or a Timorese? If nothing else, the clashes in Hebron and the Gaza Strip are certainly documented in gruesome detail. The moment in which IDF soldier Lior Cohen was seriously wounded by a pipe bomb in Hebron was captured by TV news cameras, as was the last act of Palestinian stone-thrower Mahed Etzer, 17, killed in a clash with the IDF in the Gaza Strip.

The conventional wisdom holds that the violence is born of the political stalemate, and the bizarre provocation of a leaflet depicting Mohammed as a pig circulated by a Jewish woman now under arrest in Israel. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, President Ezer Weizman, and even the Jewish community of Hebron, quickly and strongly condemned the leaflet, and stated their respect for the Islamic religion.

The unrest, however, is not "caused" by the freezing of talks or by leaflets, however condemnable, unless one considers Palestinian violence to be inevitable. But nowhere is it written that when Palestinians are unhappy, they must be violent. In fact, it is just the opposite that is written and signed into solemn agreements.

When asked why the Palestinian Authority is taking no action to prevent Palestinians from attacking Israeli forces, Palestinian Preventive Security chief Jibril Rajoub responded, "We are not responsible for defending Israelis from the policies of the Netanyahu government". Actually, Rajoub is required by the Hebron agreement to "... prevent any provocation or friction that may affect the normal life in the city". Though Israeli security officials point out that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat is under pressure from radical elements, there is little doubt that his multiple security services have the power to quell the violence at the moment it is no longer in his interest for it to continue.

Behind Arafat's belief that the current violence is indeed in his interest is the widely prevalent automatic defense of Palestinian violence, neatly expressed by Rajoub - Palestinians cannot be blamed, Israeli policies made them do it.

This logic, though it may have tactical advantages for Arafat, is demeaning to Palestinians and deadly for the peace process. It means that every Palestinian commitment to combat violence is followed by an invisible asterisk, and fine print stating "only so long as Israel not only implements Oslo, but fulfills our demands, which go beyond any requirement in the agreement". In the meantime, Palestinians reserve the right to issue forth a constant stream of incitement to violence and lies about the Jewish people, religion, and history. On official Palestinian Authority broadcasts, via television and Internet, one can hear that the Western Wall has no historic connection to Jews, that it was created as a shrine in order to undermine the foundations of Al- Aksa Mosque, that there is no evidence of a Jewish connection to Israel, and that the stories in the Torah took place primarily in Yemen.

Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo was quoted recently in a Palestinian newspaper stating, "We are prepared for all the wars, and to sacrifice ourselves, in defending our motherland". The director-general of the Palestinian Health Ministry in Hebron, Mahmoud Batarna, claimed that Israelis had distributed 200 tons of hormone-soaked chewing gum in order to turn Palestinian women into prostitutes.

Palestinian officials, far from apologizing for spreading such rabid and dangerous propaganda, are at the center of its dissemination. A violent Israeli response to such outrages is, rightly, unthinkable. Yet a violent Palestinian response to such provocations, no matter how marginal, is considered inevitable.

Among the most central Palestinian demands in the peace process is that they be treated as equals, with respect. There is no denying that Israeli forces, in their daily contact with Palestinians over the past 30 years, could have done a better job of meeting Israel's security needs without causing unnecessary humiliation and hatred. There is much Israeli sympathy with the Palestinian desire to run their own lives, and even to make their own mistakes.

But mutual respect and understanding cannot be built on a foundation of violence and vicious falsehoods. There are some who would say that it is naive to expect more from the Palestinians. The alternative, however, is to believe that the Palestinians who want real democracy and who are sincerely willing to live peacefully together with Israel in the same land will never hold sway among their people.

Ultimately, most Israelis will shrug off the hateful rhetoric aimed at them; but Palestinians will have to live under the dictatorship whose disrespect for their human rights is part and parcel of its vitriolic hatred of Israel. The lesson should not be lost that reliance upon hatred of an external enemy is the hallmark of dictatorships generally, and particularly in the Middle East.

The Netanyahu government is rightly criticized for dickering over cabinet seats while Hebron burns. But, supporters of the peace process are doing the Palestinian people no favors by not holding their leadership to higher standards of restraint, adherence to agreements, and refraining from offensive denials of Jewish history.

What is anti-Zionism?

Anti-Zionism is the conviction that Israel, of all the world's countries, does not have the right to exist. It is the conviction that the determination of what constitutes Israel's "secure and defensible borders" should not be made by the Israeli people, either directly or via representation. It is discrimination or double standards against Israel, even if because of ignorance; the criticism of Israel while displaying relative silence on often much more pressing and tragic situations all around the world.

Before we had a Jewish State, when we were dispersed among the nations, we assumed that Jew hatred was a result of our not having a country of our own. Because we maintained our unique and different customs in our host countries, people related to us as aliens. It mattered not that we learned the language and contributed to the development of all the lands of our Exile. We were always outsiders.

There were some Zionist leaders who thought that this hatred could be removed with the reestablishment of an independent Jewish state. We would then become like all the other nations and no longer appear as aliens who needed to depend upon others. This line of thought has been proven untrue, because now all that hatred which was directed at the Wandering Jew, who lived without a country and benefited from others, is now directed against the Jewish independent state.

We have been hated and looked down upon as "sub humans" for so long that the nations of the world refuse to accept the phenomenon of a Jewish independent nation in their homeland. They feel a need to impose limits to our independence. They will determine for us how and when to defend ourselves. They will tell us where our capital should be located. They will decide where a Jew can or cannot live in his homeland.

Should we decide to defend ourselves against our enemies we are condemned for fighting as aggressors and terrorists. And should we decide to build homes in our capital city we are condemned for initiating a war!

Arguing with anti-Zionists is not just pointless. It is demeaning. The intellectual battle to be fought today is not with the anti-Zionists, those who maintain that the Jewish state should never have existed, but with the post-Zionists, those who maintain that the Jewish national idea has outlived its usefulness, that it is obsolete, an impediment now both to individual self-expression and to entry into the post-sovereign world of the coming century.

In the 1990s, many of the Islamic social and political movements in the Arab world joined the resurgent trend of Holocaust denial among European anti-Semites. This was mainly the result and influence of the persistent activity in this field by Roger Gauroudi, a French scholar and leading European anti-Semite. Gauroudi, a former Christian Marxist and French Communist Party member of the French parliament, converted to Islam following the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran. He soon became a prominent figure in promoting anti-Semitism among Islamic movements. But since he was known for his anti-Jewish writings as a Marxist too, he gained the support of many Arab circles beyond the Islamic movements. When he was put on trial and convicted in France for Holocaust denial several years ago, his popularity in Arab and Islamic countries increased. Even the Islamic official establishments in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority (PA) supported him. For instance, in 1997, Al-Azhar, the official monthly of the highest Islamic religious authority in Egypt, published sympathetic articles supporting both Gauroudi and his ideas on Jews and Judaism.

Did even the fiercest enemies of United States policies in Vietnam ever open fire at random, with submachine guns, in Kennedy Airport or within the precincts of a New York nursery school? Has there ever been an incident in which some ferociously anti-communist group has gunned down Soviet tourists (denounced as "Stalinists")? No, and had such things occurred, those responsible would have been denounced as mad and bad. Not so when Israel is concerned.
Anti-Zionism carried to such a pitch is in fact madness. Israeli Jews are killed because they proclaim themselves as such. Israel is to be destroyed because it is a Jewish State. ...So, at Munich and Entebbe, the Jews as such were not the target? Fair enough; the victims were not the ordinary kind of Jew, citizens of States liable to persecute or protect them as circumstances or political convenience might dictate. Although weaponless, they represented something to be feared - Jews with a country of their own, Jews disinclined to accept a "democratic, secular State of Palestine" which they know would not hesitate a moment in reducing them to stateless ciphers. Dub a Jew "Zionist" and any crime can be committed against him with the clearest of consciences.

This convenient confusion between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism is nothing new. A similar cynicism, and similar sneers, were in order during the great Stalinist show-trials, conducted in Prague, among other places. The survivors have described how, arrested as Jews, they were addressed as "Zionists" so that the interrogators could feign to be anti-Zionist rather than anti-Jewish, while insulting their victims with taunts traditionally reserved for Jews, thus giving brutal bad manners a Marxist dimension hitherto lacking.

...Anti-Zionists, like traditional anti-Semites, see only the reverse side of the coin in Jewish history - the reaction not the act, the accident not the cause, the wastage not the process of creation. In this they display a lack of human understanding and also an inability to think dialectically - shortcomings from which they are the first to suffer. The way in which, to salve their consciences and in the interest of their policies, they picture the Jew as a sordid, guilty "Zionist" freezes their ability to think and feel. The freedom to exist which they refuse me prevents them from seeing the world as it is. Their reasoning is infantile, their information inadequate, their scale of values absurd in that one Palestinian equals 1,000 Kurds or 10,000 Balts or Armenians - and how many Nagas or Tibetans? (A scale in which an Afghan, incidentally, counts for nothing.) The anti-Zionist is not interested in the sufferings of these other peoples and takes no trouble to find out about them, or about many others in revolt against the imperialisms he is all too ready to praise. The free Jew, the Israeli, he is completely unable to understand.

Anti-Semitism is not dead. Although anti-Semitic incidents have declined and a multi-cultural acceptance has produced wider tolerance in many states including the US, a 2000-year-old virus has mutated, and lives on, often in a disguised form. And the existence and achievements of the Jewish state in an area of relative backwardness stimulate anti-Semitism and furnish a respectable cover.

Anti-Semitism as a corollary of anti-Zionism: a basic tenet of Hizballah ideology as reflected in the Hizballah press

Hizballah is completely opposed to Jews and Judaism and stresses the eternal conflict between them and Islam, although it also cites the more tolerant aspects of Islam toward the Jews. The movement calls to distinguish between Judaism and Zionism, but at the same time reinforces its anti-Zionism by reviving the ancient Islamic enmity toward the Jews, revealing that essentially there is no separation between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism.

Hizballah's total negation of Israel's existence is, on the face of it, a natural extension of its negation of the West, especially the US, inasmuch as Israel is perceived as a tool to realize American interests in the region. However, this negation based on Islamic precepts portraying Judaism as the oldest and bitterest adversary of Islam and intertwined with anti-Semitic motifs, taken mainly from Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeyni's preaching and rhetoric, turns into a basic tenet in the movement's general Islamic plan. It appears, therefore, that the line distinguishing between anti-Zionism - the de-legitimization of Israel's right to exist - and anti-Semitism - a primordial hatred of the Jews is becoming increasingly difficult to define.

.Hizballah spokesmen interchange the terms Zionism and Judaism, and Zionists and Jews, freely. In an interview, Husayn Fadlallah, the most senior religious authority of Hizballah, [uses] Qur'anic references to the corrupt, treacherous and aggressive nature of the Jews. "We find in the Qu'ran that the Jews are the most aggressive towards the Muslims, not because they are Jews or because they believe in the Torah but because of their aggressive resistance to the unity of the faith. They reached an agreement with the idolaters to fight the prophet Muhammad, Fadlallah asserted; they are known as the killers of the prophets; they spread corruption on earth; and they oppress other peoples." The idea that those most hostile to the faithful are the Jews and the idolaters is a theme which appears repeatedly"

Fadlallah and other Hizballah spokesmen do not see any contradiction in presenting Islamic sources as displaying tolerance toward the Jews, on the one hand, and as exposing the Jews' wickedness, on the other. These same sources, according to Hizballah ideologists, also provide the reasoning behind, and the motivation for, the irreconcilable struggle between Islam and Judaism, which is viewed as the struggle between truth and falsehood, and good and evil. The Hizballah fighters wage war on Israel out of religious belief and conviction, "just as they pray and fast--it's God's order to them."

Israel is a state that emerged in the heart of the Arab nation in order to revive "the Jewish persona" through Zionist racism in confrontation with all Muslims. "Either we destroy Israel or Israel destroys us." A further dimension is added to the abiding enmity between Islam and Judaism in the utilization of Western anti-Semitic images and perceptions of Jews. "The Jews are the enemy of the entire human race." "Zionism dictates the world and dominates it." "The Jews constitute a financial power ... THE HAMAS IDEOLOGY

In November 1988, Hamas published a covenant which was an attempt to systematically present the movement's ideology, in contrast to the PLO covenant. It presents the Arab-Israeli conflict as the epitome of an inherently irreconcilable struggle between Jews and Muslims, and Judaism and Islam. It is not a national or territorial conflict but a historical, religious, cultural and existential conflict between "truth and falsehood," the believers and the infidels, in which one side will eventually be the victor. The only way to confront this struggle is through Islam and by means of jihad (holy war), until victory or martyrdom. "The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews [and kill them]; until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: Oh Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!? This ideology is represented in the movement's emblem, which shows the Qur'an and a sword. Reflecting this point of view, the Hamas leaflets were the most vociferous of all leaflets distributed by the Palestinian organizations during the Intifada and contained the most extreme anti-Semitic statements against Jews, Israelis and Zionists.

The terminology used against the Jews in the leaflets is a mixture of Western anti-Semitic and Islamic rhetoric. Some of the anti-Semitic expressions appearing repeatedly in the leaflets are:

"The brothers of the apes, the killers of the Prophets, blood suckers, warmongers," "barbaric," "cowards," "cancer expanding in the land of Isra' [reference to Palestine which was the destination of Muhammad's night journey and Mi'raj [Muhammad's ascent to heaven] threatening the entire Islamic world," "a conceited and arrogant people," "the enemy of God and mankind," "the descendants of treachery and deceit,", Nazis," "spreading corruption in the land of Islam," "the Zionist culprits who poisoned the water in the past, killed infants, women and elders," "thieves, monopolists, usurers."

Verses from the Qur'an and the hadith (the traditions associated with Muhammad passed down by his companions) were used often to reinforce the negative image of the Jews, and terminology with Islamic connotations was dominant. The leaflets usually began with the religious invocation: "In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compa.ssionate." Almost every leaflet contained a Qur'anic verse either as a heading or as a conclusion, emphasizing a certain feature inherent to the Jews, is instigating war. For example: "Oh believers! take not the Jews or the Christians as friends." "So make war on them: By your hand will God chastise them, and will put them to shame, and will give you victory over them, and will heal the bosoms of a people who believe."

The Soviets were strong, mobilized enemies of Israel early on, and they remained so until relatively recently. Soviet foreign policy has been active, not passive, during this whole period and its hostility toward Israel was manifested in a variety of ways. I am especially sensitive to the campaign in the various organizations of the United Nations, where the Soviets pioneered and strongly supported the Zionism-is-racism resolution. The Soviets sponsored that resolution in UNESCO and in the General Assembly. The Soviets were pushing that resolution as recently as 1985 at UN meetings in Nairobi. Even when the Arab nations were ready to abandon it, the Soviets pushed to keep the Zionism-is-racism resolution on the agenda of the Women's Conference.

I did not forget the first song I learned in school just before the six day war titled "Arabs our beloved and Jews our dogs." I used to wonder at that time who the Jews were, but repeated with the rest of the kids the words without any knowledge of the meaning.

I was fascinated with Islamic history as I learned that the Islamic prophet Mohammed extradited a Jewish tribe from Saudi Arabia and ordered the be-heading of all the men from another tribe, the women were taken as concubines. I used to believe as Islam taught, only a Caliph (Islamic ruler) can rule the world. Islam is not a religion for one's personal and moral life, but a system of law and government to the whole world, if not achieved through peaceful means would have to wage war against all whom do not submit to Islam, and with one billion Muslims living today I believed that it could happen.

So how do you explain Jews who are anti-Zionist?

It is never easy to be oneself; when a man's sense of identity and his awareness of himself as a Jew are at loggerheads, the result is liable to be confusing, even distressing. For Jews in this position, the emergence of Israel on the scene has intensified their inner conflicts.

...The re-emergence of Israel - an event so unexpected as to appear miraculous - has given Jews an opportunity to become once more masters of their own collective fate and to retrace the steps which led their forefathers into exile. But the glory of that event has been a deeply alarming experience for certain Jews (among whom anti-Zionism has found eager allies) too long accustomed to the gloom of the Diaspora and its twilight delights.

...It is the repeated emergence of the same old theme in different guises that needs elucidation. The language of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism - blatant, insinuating, grotesque or vulgar - is monotonous enough, testifying more to the existence of a psychological malaise than to any originality of thought. Anti-Zionists range from the moderates to the extremists, who are not open to argument at all. Some of the most unbridled extremists, some of the most emotionally confused among the moderates, happen to be Jews; and the Jewish moderates, especially, are often held up for our admiration. Unfortunately, such persons tend to be the rejects and the dross of a community undergoing a transformation, a community of which they are very far from being representative.

The Jewish Diaspora is not immune to its own brand of wishful thinking, undue depression or elation, and mental confusion induced by misinformation. Its weaker members turn renegade or, like metal filings arranging themselves round lines of force, turn ingratiatingly to the powers that be, or what they see as such. That there should be Jews to challenge the existence of Israel and indulge in lengthy public self-questioning on this theme represents warped thinking, a breach of faith, and a human tragedy. And this is a unique phenomenon, No Algerian, Cambodian, Chilean, Czech (and now, Afghan) exile, however bitterly opposed to his current government, questions his country's right to exist.

I may be accused of giving unmerited importance to persons who have cut themselves off from the fate of their own community. But their views are often given exceptional publicity in quarters ill-disposed towards Israel, and hence they cannot be ignored.

Is post-Zionism a form of anti-Zionism?

They claimed that the Jews had never been a people until the Zionists muddled their thinking, and had no desire for nationhood. Post-Zionism turned out to be a peculiar form of anti-Zionism. In contrast with the anti-Zionism of an earlier era, the post-Zionists made their peace with Israel's existence as a state. (It is hard to argue with success.) But they sought to undermine the state's moral and philosophical foundations, to dismantle the Jewish identity of the state and reconfigure it as a state of "all its citizens.
